Amazing Grace

 Amazing Grace

The concept of grace is central to the AA program of recovery, for as we read in the 12&12, we are “sober only by the grace of God.” The book uses the word a total of 23 times, with reference, for instance, to specific Steps (2, 6, 7, 10, 11, 12) and Traditions (1, 4, 5, 10) as well as specific principles (humility, willingness, forgiveness, faith, love, courage, self-examination, prayer). Thus our choice of “Amazing Grace” for this section of Audios & Videos. John Newton’s lyrics capture the alcoholic condition—indeed the human condition—as few songs of its type do. Lost we were, and blind. Few convey a greater sense of gratitude and of hope, or give better expression to the AA ideal of reaching a point in our recovery and spiritual journey where we can be “happy, joyous and free.” Free at last. The music, the bagpipes in particular, reach deep into the soul. Witness the audience’s reaction in the little clip we’ve selected, which is why, of the numerous choices available, we chose it. No words. Only spirit.

Note: The original clip, of a performance in Brazil, is no longer available. We are replacing it here with the closest we could find: a 2016 performance in London

Amazing Grace, Lyrics

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now I am found
Was blind, but now I see
‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear
And grace my fears relieved
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed
Through many dangers, toils and snares
We have already come
'Twas grace has brought us safe thus far
And grace will lead us home
The Lord has promised good to me
His word my hope secures
He will my shield and portion be, As long as life endures
Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease
I shall possess within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.
When we’ve been there ten thousand years
Bright, shining as the sun
We've no less days to sing God's praise
Than when we've first begun.
